LENTEN PRAYER OF ST EPHRAIM THE SYRIAN
The Lenten prayer of St Ephraim the Syrian is a regular part of Great Lent. It is read in the morning and in the evening on the weekdays of the Lenten season. Whereas on Friday evening, Saturday and Sunday, it is not read, for the services of these days do not follow the Lenten pattern.
This is how we pray:
“O Lord and Master of my life, take from me the spirit of sloth, despair, lust of power, and idle talk.” (prostration)
“But give rather the spirit of chastity, humility, patience, and love to Thy servant.” (prostration)
“Yea, O Lord and King, grant me to see my own transgressions, and not to judge my brother, for blessed art Thou, unto ages of ages. Amen.” (prostration)
“O God, cleanse me a sinner.” (12 times, each time followed by a bow)
“O Lord and Master of my life, take from me the spirit of sloth, despair, lust of power, and idle talk.
But give rather the spirit of chastity, humility, patience, and love to Thy servant.
Yea, O Lord and King, grant me to see my own transgressions, and not to judge my brother, for blessed art Thou, unto ages of ages. Amen.” (prostration)
The prayer of St Ephraim the Syrian is much loved by children for the many bows and prostrations we make during it. This is why the best way to read this prayer is with the whole family.
Many people like the prayer so much that they continue reading it throughout the year and that is commendable.
